Mujeres al borde de un ataque de “nervios” 1988
Almodóvar’s internationally successful film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown introduces us to Pepa (Carmen Maura), a jilted lover with problems with her answering machine. Pepa’s heart is broken as her life’s love, Ivan (Fernando Guillen), has left her. But she can’t suffer alone. Her close friend, young and flirtatious Candela, has fallen in love with a terrorist. Ivan’s son unknowingly shows up to rent out the “love nest” that Pepa and Ivan built together. Ivan’s mentally unstable wife shows up with a loaded gun, becoming the final character to join the fray. Meanwhile, Ivan is planning to fly to Stockholm with his new girlfriend, and this plane is about to be hijacked by Candela’s terrorist lover and his friends.
