Banquet is a Chinese adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet set in 10th century China. The film revolves around fate, intrigue, and revenge. The new emperor Li (Ge You) kills his older brother, who was the previous emperor, through various intrigues and marries his brother’s young, beautiful widow Princess Wan (Zhang Ziyi). Princess Wan, who only marries the emperor to protect herself, conspires with her late husband’s son, Prince Wu Luan (Daniel Wu), and a Prime Minister and a General to assassinate the emperor. The prince and the Prime Minister also have their eyes set on the imperial throne. The emperor, suspecting them, hosts a grand banquet where everyone will reveal their true intentions.
